U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, the ranking member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, has called on VA Secretary Denis McDonough to take action in response to serious deficiencies in the Department of Veterans Affairs' employee screening processes. Sen. Moran emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan to ensure that VA's workforce is screened and held to the highest professional standards. He highlighted the risks posed by unvetted VA employees with prior criminal records, stating that such shortcomings have enabled individuals to stalk, sexually harass, and assault victims at VA facilities.

In a letter to Secretary McDonough, Sen. Moran stated, “VA is placing the health and safety of veterans, their families, the public, and your workforce at unacceptable risk.” He urged VA leadership to take ownership of these shortcomings and work towards rectifying them promptly.

The Senator expressed concern over the lack of oversight within the department, citing reports from the VA Office of Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office that have identified failures in employee screening processes. These deficiencies have allowed individuals with criminal histories to work in critical roles within the VA, potentially jeopardizing the well-being of veterans and the public.

Sen. Moran raised specific instances where inadequate screening processes had led to serious consequences, including cases of sexual crimes against patients and instances of providers with revoked licenses being hired by VA facilities. He also pointed out instances where VA employees engaged in misconduct without facing appropriate consequences.

The Senator's call for a comprehensive plan to address these deficiencies comes after repeated assurances from VA leadership to address the issues, yet little progress has been made. Sen. Moran emphasized the need for Secretary McDonough to take personal leadership in ensuring the safety and well-being of veterans, the American public, and VA’s workforce.
